Live table edit using jQuery, AJAX and PHP (Twitter Bootstrap)

You would have come across live table edit earlier demonstrated using the default JS Library. This one is far optimized than the older one which uses X-Editable.js library that does not affect the design while changing the data also with a beautiful transition effect.

This concept is pretty easy to understand, lets get started with the database table creation,

Having the table ready let us flood some data into it,

We have setup the table ready to use. Having set up the required libraries X-Editable and Bootstrap’s CSS & JS Library, let us look into the markup with some PHP code.

The following PHP code will pull all the data from the mysql table and put them on document.

At this point we have our system ready except that the life is missing. The JAVASCRIPT

$.fn.editable.defaults.mode is initiated and defined with the text popup which will call the popup function in the editable.js once this is instantiated the class xedit set to be editable.

In the above javascript we also fetch two important information.

1. ID of the row
2. New data entered by the user

These two piece of information is sent to the process.php via ajax and update the table with the new user data. The success message caught on form return and the new data is fed to the <span>

Thats it! Hope you find this tutorial helpful. If you have new ideas or queries just add them to the comments, other users and I will be glad to help you out.

    Nice tutorial, however instead of hovering over the text, can’t we have button saying ‘edit’ just next to the text. That would be awesome cos that’s easier for people to understand.

    • In order to make it look simple I’ve used dotted lines below the keys. There is no restriction to play with design 😉

  • keerthi

    how to add edit option to all the column ?

    • Simpily assign class ‘xedit’ and ‘id’ attribute to the columns you want. You need to edit the javascript accordingly.

      • Benjamin Alvarez Del Villar

        I have tried many ways and does not work.

    • Hi Keerthi you can find the updated code for editing multiple columns in my reply to Benjamin’s comment.

  • Benjamin Alvarez Del Villar

    could you please make an example of how to edit multiple columns?

    • This works for me! You need to to modify a bit of HTML, jQuery and PHP

      HTML: You need to add a new attirubute say ‘key’

      ‘.$fetch[‘name’].’
      ‘.$fetch[‘details’].’
      ‘.$fetch[‘status’].’

      jQuery: Fetch the key and id to be sent to process.php

      var key = $(this).closest(‘.editable-container’).prev().attr(‘key’);
      var x = $(this).closest(‘.editable-container’).prev().attr(‘id’);
      var y = $(‘.input-sm’).val();
      var z = $(this).closest(‘.editable-container’).prev().text(y);

      PHP: Finally update based on key

      $id = $_GET[‘id’];
      $data = $_GET[‘data’];
      $key = $_GET[‘key’];
      if(mysql_query(“update information set $key=’$data’ where id=’$id'”))

      I hope this helps you Benjamin 🙂 If you still face problem I shall send the updated code to you.

      • Benjamin Alvarez Del Villar

        Excelente.

        I had tried just another option that worked for me, also using the “key”, but with this code:
        <span class= "xedit" pk="1" id="”>
        <span class= "xedit" pk="2" id="”>

        $(document).on(‘click’,’.editable-submit’,function(){
        var pk = $(this).closest(‘td’).children(‘span’).attr(‘pk’);
        var x = $(this).closest(‘td’).children(‘span’).attr(‘id’);
        var y = $(‘.input-sm’).val();
        $.ajax({
        url: “process.php?id=”+x+”&data=”+y+”&pk=”+pk,
        type: ‘GET’,
        });
        });

        And then I made a process.php: if, else,:

        $id = $_GET[‘id’];
        $data = $_GET[‘data’];
        $pk = $_GET[‘pk’];

        if($pk==1){
        if(mysql_query(“UPDATE usu SET
        usu_name=’$data’
        WHERE idusu=’$id’
        “))
        }

        elseif($pk==2){
        if(mysql_query(“UPDATE usu SET
        usu_code=’$data’
        WHERE idusu =’$id’
        “))

        }

        But this code you sent is more simplified. I’ll try.

        Another question…..
        How can I run the data-type = “textarea”, because did not pass variable, passed as undefinied.

      • ermes007

        hello supercool article, could you help me I get data=undefined in the request

        HTML

        {
        if($i%2==0) $class = 'even'; else $class = 'odd';
        echo'
        ‘.$fetch[‘model’].’
        ‘.$fetch[‘quantity’].’
        ‘.$fetch[‘status’].’

        JS

        $(document).ready(function() {

        //toggle popup / inline mode

        $.fn.editable.defaults.mode = ‘popup’;

        $(‘.xedit’).editable();

        $(document).on(‘click’,’.editable-submit’,function(){

        var k = $(this).closest(‘td’).children(‘span’).attr(‘key’);

        var x = $(this).closest(‘td’).children(‘span’).attr(‘id’);

        var y = $(‘.input-sm’).val();

        window.alert(y);

        $.ajax({

        url: “process.php?id=”+x+”&data=”+y+”&key=”+k,

        type: ‘GET’,

        });

        });

        });

        PHP

        <?php

        error_reporting(E_ALL);

        ini_set('display_errors', '1');

        $id = $_GET['id'];

        $data = $_GET['data'];

        $key = $_GET['key'];

        $db_conx = mysqli_connect('localhost', 'root', 'root','dev') ;

        $sql="UPDATE product SET $key='$data' WHERE product_id='$id'";

        if( mysqli_query($db_conx, $sql)){

        $rowsAffected = mysqli_affected_rows($db_conx);

        if ($rowsAffected == 0) {

        echo "No changes";

        }

        };

        I don't know where is the bug, thanks!

        • you need to fetch the new value in ‘data’ based on your HTML structure and jQuery script. I cannot help out without seeing your HTML structure.

          • ermes007

            Hi I’ve edited the HTML in the comment, now it’s complete

          • You need to provide id, class and key. Assuming that you are trying to apply live edit only to ‘model;’ field. I’m writing a snippet

            ‘.$fetch[‘model’].’
            ‘.$fetch[‘quantity’].’
            ‘.$fetch[‘status’].’

            If you wan’t to apply live edit to all three fields apply class, id and key to each of them.

          • ermes007

            In the end the error was for the y variable wrong class, var y = $(‘.input-medium’).val();

        Hi Ashik,

        I know I’m very late with this. But is there a chance you can work that out? I’m working on a music database and I want to easily insert data in multiple tables. With the select button I can select different artists.

  • O Stearn

    Thanks a lot Ashik, I looked everywhere for a tutorial like this. Great results!

  • Tadeo Armenta

    Thanks a lot Ashik, i’ve an issue, may be you could help me with it.

    no matter what i put in the edit box, $data’s value is always “10” when it goes to process.php

    any idea?

    • seems like you’ve explicitly defined value ’10’ in the HTML or in the process.php. Do you also face the same issue from the downloaded code?

      • Tadeo Armenta

        problem was solved renaming “input-sm” in default class variable inside bootstrap-editable.js..

        seems that another plugin was using the same class name XD

        Tnks anyway!

    how to do with multiple column edit… i try but its not work

    • I’ve given the answer in repy to Benjamin Alvarez Del Villar’s comment. Its working for him as well as for me.

  • Dhanashri

    yes but it’s not work for me… the problem is in update

    • The ‘key’ attribute for must match with the column name in the table. If this does not match your update fails.

      • Saepul

        dont forget to add key to url like this :

        url: “process.php?id=”+x+”&data=”+y+”&key=”+key,

    Inline doesn’t work? Is it possible to have it submit different fields to different mysql tables from the same page/form?

    • Inline is an old concept. If you wan’t to try inline you can find several blog posts on web. You need to pass each variable to a specific mysql query to insert each item into a different table.

        ?

  • Greg

    Ashik, this is just awesome – thank you so much. I struggled with the multiple column updates like a few people here. Your reply to Benjamin worked once I added

    url: “process.php?id=”+x+”&data=”+y+”&key=”+key,

    to my HTML. Cheers! Greg

  • Greg

    Hi Ashik, now that I have this working, I’m looking to extend it. I would like to have it present a select list on-click to edit. For example, if I want to edit status, it presents a drop down of options. Would be even cooler if the options were read from a mysql table. This would only be for the status column. I could see where other select lists would be useful on other columns. Any ideas where to start, let me know. I’m looking at this now and while I’m good in PHP/mysql I’m not as skilled in jQ/js. Thanks again.

    How could I pass the id and the name of the tag.

    It currently works when I only pass the id but not the name

    For example:
    html has:

    ‘.$row[‘dorm_id’].’

    jquery has:

    var x = $(this).closest(‘td’).children(‘span’).attr(‘id’);
    var key = $(this).closest(‘td’).children(‘span’).attr(‘name’);

    alert(key); //gives me undefined

  • Michael

    Hi Ashik, this looks fantastic! The preview runs perfectly. So i downoaded everything and got it all set up. However none of my edits are getting saved! What could be causing that? Everything looks fine. When I edit a cell, the briefly “flashes” pale yellow, but there are no messages. The database remains unchanged, and when I refresh the page, my edit is gone. In your preview, after editing, I notice refreshing the page keeps the edit, but changes it from bold to regular font. Thanks! -Michael

  • Guest

    Hi Ashik. Nice work. But I have a problem. Mine table and columns names has “_” (underscore) so it does not update in the database ! Do you have any idea what I can do?

    • underscores has nothing to do with table update. You need to recheck your mysql query or javascript

  • Piotr

    Hi Ashik, nice awesome code, thanks a lot and congrats !
    But, when I try edit table I’ve some problems with adding empty field (no data), for example: when I clear field or when I replace data with “0”. The same works your demo. Any solution?

    • netracerz

      I am having the same issues. If current data is any integer except 0, i can edit and change them with success. However to change any value to 0, no errors occured, however the database seems not being updated to 0, remains the previous value.

      Pls advise.

    • netracerz

      However, if the value were entered with 00, 000 or 0000, the databse is updated to 0.

  • great post, it works!

  • Petr Kolínek

    Hey Ashik, I love this tutorial so far, but you are missing your process.php code snippet. And also, code from download and tutorial doesnot match. Great work though 😉

  • Here you go,

    You need to make changes in the index.php and process.php files

    In index.php replace the following with the old code

    ‘.$fetch[‘name’].’
    ‘.$fetch[‘details’].’
    ‘.$fetch[‘status’].’

    In javascript

    var key = $(this).closest(‘.editable-container’).prev().attr(‘key’);
    var x = $(this).closest(‘.editable-container’).prev().attr(‘id’);
    var y = $(‘.input-sm’).val();
    var z = $(this).closest(‘.editable-container’).prev().text(y);

    $.ajax({
    url: “process.php?id=”+x+”&data=”+y+’&key=’+key,
    type: ‘GET’,
    success: function(s){
    if(s == ‘status’){
    $(z).html(y);}
    if(s == ‘error’) {
    alert(‘Error Processing your Request!’);}
    },
    error: function(e){
    alert(‘Error Processing your Request!!’);
    }
    });

    And in process.php use the following code

    include(“connect.php”);
    if($_GET[‘id’] and $_GET[‘data’])
    {
    $id = $_GET[‘id’];
    $data = $_GET[‘data’];
    $key = $_GET[‘key’];
    if(mysql_query(“update information set $key=’$data’ where id=’$id'”))
    echo ‘success’;
    }

  • vikky

    First of all Thanks for this nice plugin. But I have same problem as Michael . I can see the updated value in table cell but if I do see ‘view source’ of html page, I cant see any updated value. Please help me

  • Chenyang Wang

    This table is so cool. But there is a problem with me when trying updated table code. When click on and editing the table, the width of the whole table will shrink. And then, for example, when editing name, the content in column ‘Description’ will go to column ‘Status’ and the content in ‘Status’ will go out of the table. Can you help me to figure this out?

    • You need to play around with the css.

      • Chenyang Wang

        I have figure it out. The element is missing “span” tag. After add them, the problem solved. May I ask one more thing? If I want to change the column name, where do I also need to concern besides the elements.

        • The update process is automated. The field name in the database table is pulled using php while the page loads. Do not worry about field names in the code.

          • Chenyang Wang

            For me, the fieldnames are customerID, cusName, mobile. All the $fetch varaiables are modified accordingly. However, when editing, only mobile can affect the database and remains the changes, the other two has no effects after refresh. I cannot figure it out….

        • Andre Brazil

          I had the same problem, how do you solved this? Can you show te code?

          Could you share the changes that you made?

    hello
    I would like to be able to modify multiple table names, form the process.php page, how can i modify it and assign to table name a variable, so the correct table is updated when I’m working on it?
    Something like..
    if ( mysql_query(“update $anytablename on set $name=’$value’ where id=’$pk'”) ) {
    let’s say my table is $anytablename how can I apply this concept?

    Many thanks

    Hi, i’m testing your code, it seems working. Your demo is simple actually. You can remove your $i variable with even adn odd thing, you don’t using it properly since you don’t increment $i. Plus I don’t see what you tried to do with does class you don’t use them.

    For some people, you might have multiple databases/tables that you only want to use one file to process all database editing

    Define your table and database at the top of your multiple files; ie students.php interns.php etc etc.

    $varDB = “test’;
    $varTable = “TableTest”;

    Update your table data results if needed;
    ‘.$row[‘example].’

    In the script side of your main file, add the following lines;
    var tables = ;
    var db = ;

    Edit the url: portion to the following;
    url: “process.php?id=”+x+’&data=’+y+’&key=’+key+’&table=’+tables+’&db=’+db,

    Process.php add the following;
    $table = $_GET[‘table’];
    $db = $_GET[‘db’];
    @mysqli_select_db($dbc, $database) or die;

    Update the mysql_query line;
    if(mysqli_query($dbc, “UPDATE $table set $key=,’$data’ where id=’$id'”))

    Troubleshooting if needed, add before the $.ajax;
    document.write(“process.php?id=”+x+’&data=’+y+’&key=’+key+’&table=’+tables+’&db=’+db);

    Dear Ashik Basheer,
    I loved your code and it’s was very helpful for me.
    I just have questions.
    I found your email on the discussion board and I sent you an email.
    I don’t know if you received my mail.
    Hope you can help me.
    Thanks

    Awesome piece of code and is working fine for me! But I did encounter one issue with your code.
    If I enter & character into one of the editable text fields, the input data is truncated when inserting into the database. for example if I enter weather&appID=123 then only “weather” is inserted into the database. Any suggestions of how to fix this issue? thanks!
